Sign up Hotmail. How to Create a Hotmail Account, Hotmail is one of the most popular free email accounts of all time, which is no surprise considering it’s owned by the most famous software company of all time, Microsoft.

These days most people know it by the name Outlook, but it’s the same email service from the same people – you even sign up and login on the same website!

If you don’t have a Hotmail account, or if you simply want to create a new one, Sign up a Hotmail account is super easy and just takes a few minutes.

Create a Hotmail Account

1.Start by going to This will automatically change to (Hotmail has gone through many versions, so now Hotmail, Live, Outlook, and Microsoft all mean the same thing). You’ll see the sign in form for people who already have a Hotmail or Outlook email address (known as a Microsoft account).

2.Below the big blue “Sign in” button, it says, “No account? Create one!” Click on “Create one!” to go to the new Hotmail account registration page.

3.Fill in the required personal information, like your name, country, date of birth, gender, a mobile phone number and an alternate email address (these last two are to help secure your account and help reset your password if you ever forget it).

4.Choose a Hotmail username, which will be your new email address. It can’t be something that anyone else is using. If the name that you want is already taken, you can try a different domain (see below) or try rearranging the name or adding numbers to the end of it. For example, if “janesmith” is taken you could try adding a middle initial and birth year to get “janersmith1973”.

5.You’ll notice that the default domain for your new email address is “”. If you want your email address to end in “” instead, click on the little gray box with the down arrow and select “” from the list.

6.Enter the password you want to use to sign into your Hotmail account in the future. It has to be at least 8 characters long and is case sensitive, which means capital letters and lowercase letters are considered different characters (“A” is not the same as “a”). Try to pick a password that isn’t easy to guess (i.e. not “password”, “abcdefgh”, “12345678”, etc.). Good practice is to avoid dictionary words or any personal information about you (like pet’s names or your Social Security Number), and to use a mixture of character types.

7.Having a combination of upper case and lower case letters, plus numbers and special characters makes it much more difficult for password hacking software to break into your account. For example, a hacker’s program can crack the word “password” in about 1 minute, but if you change some letters to upper case and change the “o” to the number zero (paSSw0rd), it now takes the program more than 21 hours. If you also change the “a” to “@”, (p@SSw0rd), it takes almost 25 days.

8.Microsoft doesn’t want a robot creating 1000 new Hotmail accounts (which will most likely be used for spam), so you have to enter a captcha code to verify that you’re a human being. If you can’t see it, you can ask for a new one or ask for an audio code.

9.If you don’t want to receive promotional offers from Microsoft (you probably don’t, but who am I to judge?), uncheck the box below the captcha field.

10.If you’ve got some time to kill, read Microsoft’s services agreement, privacy policy and cookies policy (does anyone actually do this?).

11.Finally, click on the big blue “Create account” button.

Create a Hotmail Account

Create a Hotmail account on mobile

These days, most of us like to have easy access to our email on the go, and the best way to do that is using the official mobile app for whatever email platform you use. The Microsoft Outlook mobile app is the app to use for your create Hotmail account. And if you want, you can even create your Hotmail account directly in the app instead of using your PC to do it.

The steps to create a new Hotmail account via the Outlook mobile app are basically the same as those described above for computers, except that you’ll have to download and install the app to your device (if you don’t already have it), and if you do already have it, ensure that no other account is logged in. When you open the app, you should see a sign in screen with the same option to “create a new account”.

Now that you’ve created a Hotmail account…

Your Hotmail account is an official Microsoft account, which means it’s not just good for email. You can also use for an account on a Windows device (tablet, Windows phone, laptop, etc.), OneDrive cloud storage, or for you gamers out there, Xbox Live. Microsoft also now owns Skype, and you can usually use your Hotmail email and password to log in to Skype messenger (or MSN messenger, but I don’t know of anyone who still uses that these days).
